Daikin USA recalls 60,000 packaged AC units

USA/CANADA: Daikin has recalled over 60,000 Amana packaged terminal air conditioners/heat pumps (PTACs) in the USA and Canada due to fire concerns.

The models affected are those equipped with DigiAir modules, factory-installed make-up air system with configurable dehumidification.

About 62,100 units sold in the USA are said to be affected, including a further 302 sold in Canada. They are produced in the USA by Daikin Comfort Technologies Manufacturing in Houston, Texas.

The company has received 52 reports of incidents with the DigiAir compressor in the USA, including 10 that resulted in fires. There have been no reports of any issues with the products in Canada, and no reports of injuries in either country.

The US units were sold direct and through heating and cooling dealers nationwide from May 2015 through January 2023 for between $1,200 and $1,400. The affected units in Canada were sold from January 2020 to October 2022.

The recalled units are beige and have a model number that begins with PMH or PMC.

Consumers have been advised to immediately stop using the recalled product until the DigiAir compressor in the recalled PTAC units has been disabled by following instructions to disable it and to contact Daikin Comfort Technologies Manufacturing to arrange a free repair of the unit by a qualified technician.

The Amana PTAC operates a two-compressor system – R410A in the PTAC and R134a in the DigiAir module. The factory installed DigiAir module is a “make–up air” system to assist in providing outside air into a room (living space) to replace ventilation air that is usually removed through an exhaust air system.

Japanese manufacturer acquired the Amana brand when it purchased US manufacturer Goodman In 2014.

In 2018, Goodman recalled over 500,000 PTACs following concerns over fan motors overheating.
